I recently attended the three hour self-defence course as a team outing with our group of pediatric therapists who are out in the community often. This was an incredible team building opportunity! The team also learned numerous strategies to deescalate a situation and keep ourselves safe. Aileeen and Marti were a superb blend of serious, thoughtful and lighthearted. The time went by extremely quickly. I am thankful to have walked away with more tools in my pocket to be alert and safe. I think this will be an annual team outing. Highly recommended!

I love Thousand Waves!!! I met my best friend there and I learn a lot to show to my family. I personally love to learn different martial art moves as well as learn a lot of the Japanese traditions they have in japan! The teachers are wonderful and they teach you a lot about how to respect each other and the environment! I have taken classes there for 5 years! All the friendly people that make me feel more at home and together with people as like I was with my family! I am planing to stay at Thousand Waves for a long time because nothing can break the connection of that dojo and me!

My 6 year old daughter has been taking karate classes here for about a year and loves every single session and teacher. I'm so impressed with the instructors perfect balance of fun and discipline to bring out the best in all kids. My daughter can't wait to go to classes and I'm confident that many aspects of her life are improved as a result of participation. This is a great use of time and money!

This place is absolutely fantastic! Patient teachers and affordable class options. It doesn't matter what your level is even if you're a total beginner Do yourself a favor and give this Dojo a shot!

I grew up training at Thousand Waves, then left for school, travelled abroad, and have only recently returned to the area. Since being away from Chicago I have visited dozens of martial arts schools, from New York, to San Francisco, to South America, to the Middle East, and while I have liked many of the experiences I've had, I can honestly say that there is not a single one that comes close to providing what Thousand Waves provides to its students, families, participants, and community. It gave me self-confidence, physical and mental strength and agility, and a way to address violence without being overwhelmed by it, among many many other things. It has been a truly life-defining experience for me, and I am certainly not alone in this assessment. 🙂

Skilled senseis, warm and welcoming environment, very friendly atmosphere. Unlike other dojos they are supportive and help the one who is falling behind. Kyoshi Tom, senpai Bryan, kyoshi Katherine and Mattie are very helpful teachers, strongly recommend it to everybody!

Much more than a martial arts gym. Formal in the traditional sense with Kata forms, sparring, meditation, and a well defined syllabus of material taught at all ages. Yet contemporary with a strong focus on building and serving the community through broad inclusion, self defense outreach programs, and fostering respect for others. All are welcome, and all benefit from personal growth physically, mentally, and spiritually.

My children went here years ago and now that they're 21 and 24 it's good to see the principles they learn still with them to this day. I miss seeing the staff and will have to make a trip to stop by. They were not only up lifting for the kids but also the parents.
